Switching your cat to wet food can seem like a big challenge, especially if they’re used to dry kibble or home-cooked meals. But trust me—starting small and taking it slow can make all the difference. When I first tried adding wet food to Mooli and Gajar’s diet, it was a gradual process that worked wonders for their health and happiness.
Why transitioning slowly matters
Cats are creatures of habit, and sudden changes in their diet can upset their stomach or lead to rejection of new food. A gradual transition not only helps their digestion but also allows them to adjust to the new flavours and textures.
Here’s how I did it with Mooli & Gajar
Days 1–2: Start with 25% wet food and 75% dry food. Mix them well so your cat gets used to the taste and smell.
Days 3–4: Increase to 50% wet food and 50% dry food. This is when Gajar started showing interest in the rich flavours!
Days 5–6: Move to 75% wet food and 25% dry food. Mooli loved the creamy texture by this stage and would run to his bowl during mealtimes!
Day 7: Fully transition to 100% wet food or a mix that works best for your cat.
Tips for a smooth transition
Temperature matters: Cats prefer warm food as it mimics the temperature of prey. Heat it slightly for maximum appeal.
Consistency is key: Stick to the same flavour during the transition to avoid confusing your cat.
Watch out for tummy troubles: It’s normal for cats to experience mild digestive upset, like loose stools, when transitioning to wet food. However, if diarrhoea persists for more than 2-3 days, stop the food and consult your vet immediately.
Be patient: It’s okay if your cat takes longer to adapt—every feline has their pace.
Mooli loves her chicken-flavoured wet food mixed with a small portion of kibble, while Gajar thrives on fishy options. By starting small and staying consistent, you can help your cat enjoy the benefits of wet food—better hydration, enhanced nutrition, and a tastier dining experience!
